The Federal Government has confirmed a deadly assault on military formations in Borno State, resulting in the deaths of a senior military commander and at least 17 soldiers.Suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched coordinated attacks on multiple locations, including Benisheikh, Ngamdu, and Pulka, in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026.
The attackers reportedly stormed the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh around 1:00 am, using heavy gunfire and explosives to overpower security posts. Sources say the brigade commander, Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, his second-in-command, and the brigade Imam were among those killed during the fierce gun battle.
High Casualty Toll
While the Defence Headquarters confirmed the attack, there has been a discrepancy in the casualty figures. Military authorities initially stated that “a few” soldiers died, with an official statement later claiming only four personnel were lost. However, local government officials and intelligence sources have verified that the death toll is significantly higher.
A local government chairman confirmed that “the brigade commander lost his life” and that the attack was devastating . Residents and security analysts report that “more than 10 soldiers” died, with other sources placing the number of troops killed at 17 or 18, including the senior officers. Beyond the human toll, the insurgents destroyed several military vehicles and equipment before being forced to retreat by troops .
Presidential Condolences
President Bola Tinubu has mourned the fallen soldiers, describing them as “unforgettable heroes.” In a statement released by the State House, the President praised their courage, noting that the attack is a “sign of desperation” by insurgents who are feeling the pressure of ongoing military operations.
From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense land and air offensives against the insurgents… The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” President Tinubu said.
He extended condolences to the families of the deceased, particularly the family of Brigadier-General Braimah, and vowed that the sacrifices of the soldiers will “not be in vain. He has also directed security agencies to ensure the attackers are brought to justice.
Military Response
The Defence Headquarters stated that troops responded with “exceptional courage” and forced the attackers to retreat in disarray . Despite the losses, clearance operations are ongoing in the region to track fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping .
