In a landmark act of philanthropy, Nigerian business titan Folorunso Alakija has dramatically elevated the landscape of healthcare and medical education in Southwest Nigeria. The renowned billionaire has officially gifted a monumental, fully-equipped medical research and training hospital, valued at a staggering thirty-four billion naira, to Osun State University (UniOSun).

The sprawling facility, christened the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital in honour of her parents, was formally commissioned today. The ceremony was graced by the presence of former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, underscoring the project’s national significance.

This institution represents far more than a conventional hospital. Designed as a state-of-the-art academic health centre, it is poised to become a pivotal hub for training the next generation of Nigerian medical professionals while advancing critical research. The hospital’s scale is impressive, featuring 250 admission beds spread across 20 distinct clinical departments and 5 non-clinical support units.

Its comprehensive services include a dedicated community health outreach programme, full maternity and neonatal care suites, and advanced research and diagnostics laboratories. For treatment and surgical care, the facility is exceptionally well-appointed. It houses four cutting-edge operating theatres, a 16-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for critical care, and a specialized ophthalmology unit. Diagnostic capabilities are world-class, featuring the latest in medical imaging technology, including CT scanners, MRI machines, ultrasound, and digital X-ray. Furthermore, the inclusion of radiotherapy suites addresses a crucial need for advanced cancer treatment within the region.

This donation by Mrs. Alakija, Vice Chair of Famfa Oil, transcends charity; it is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital and health security. By directly linking a teaching hospital of this calibre to a state university, the initiative tackles two profound challenges simultaneously: it expands access to high-quality, specialized healthcare for the public and creates an unparalleled practical training environment for medical and nursing students.

The emphasis on research is particularly forward-thinking, aiming to foster homegrown innovation to address local and national health issues. The handover of this N34 billion asset sets a powerful new benchmark for private-sector intervention in Nigeria’s educational and health infrastructure.

It stands as a lasting testament to a legacy of giving, poised to save countless lives, train thousands of healthcare workers, and inspire a new wave of philanthropic commitment across the nation.
