Eric Chelle's Marseille Link Grows Amid Real Madrid DreamEric Chelle's Marseille Link Grows Amid Real Madrid Dream

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is navigating an intriguing moment in his career balancing immediate links to one of France’s biggest clubs with a long-declared dream of managing Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The 48-year-old Franco-Malian tactician has reportedly emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant managerial position at Olympique de Marseille following the departure of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi .

De Zerbi left the Ligue 1 side “by mutual agreement” after a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and a disappointing Champions League exit .According to reports in France, Chelle’s name has been put forward to Marseille through intermediaries, with the club compiling a shortlist of possible candidates .

No formal approach has been made, and Chelle faces competition from former Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi and ex-Marseille captain Habib Beye, who is reportedly a leading contender .The timing has fueled speculation.

Eric Chelle was recently spotted at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome during a Coupe de France match against Rennes, a visit that inevitably stirred talk of a potential move . With no competitive international fixtures currently engaging him, the coach is understood to be available should Marseille move quickly in their recruitment process .

Eric Chelle’s stock has risen considerably since taking charge of Nigeria in January 2025 . At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, he guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish, with the team finishing as the tournament’s top scorers, 14 goals in six matches and earning widespread praise for their attacking style .

His overall record shows 12 wins, five draws, and only two losses in 19 matches, with 36 goals scored and 15 conceded .This success has inevitably attracted attention. Beyond the Marseille link, Chelle has reportedly drawn interest from national teams including Tunisia and Angola.

The Tunisia Football Federation is said to be willing to offer around $100,000 monthly to secure his services .Yet amid this swirl of opportunity, Chelle has articulated an even grander ambition.

Speaking with French broadcaster RMC Sport, he declared: “My biggest dream? To become Real Madrid’s first-ever African coach”. He would technically become the third African to manage Los Blancos following Carlos Queiroz (Mozambique-born) and Zinedine Zidane (Algeria-born) but the first from sub-Saharan Africa.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is watching developments closely. President Ibrahim Gusau has repeatedly stressed that Chelle remains under contract with one year remaining and is expected to honor it .

We don’t want to bring some distraction on him, because we quite well understand that he enjoys working with Nigeria,” Gusau stated . He emphasized that career fulfillment matters more than money:

The key thing is that I know Coach Eric believes in Super Eagles, and he believes that he can achieve whatever he wants to achieve in his career with the national team within the African continent” .For Chelle, the Marseille link represents an immediate test of that commitment. A return to French football where his coaching journey began with amateur side Groupe Sportif Consolat in 2014 carries obvious appeal. But the NFF’s firm stance suggests any move would require timing and negotiation.

As speculation intensifies, Chelle’s trajectory reflects a broader narrative: African coaches are increasingly commanding attention on the global stage. Whether his next step leads to the Stade Vélodrome, keeps him with the Super Eagles, or ultimately points toward the Santiago Bernabéu, one thing is clear Eric Chelle is beginning to dream big, and the football world is taking notice .
